Atakoy Biological Treatment Plant Istanbul, ISKI General Directorate ATAKOY WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT CONSTRUCTION
Having vital importance for Istanbul, the construction of Atakoy Biological Treatment Plant has began in 24 May 2007 and it has constructed for 2,5 years.
The plant has costed 108.000.000 € and has began to comission at the beginning of 2010. The first stage of the plant is 400.000 m3/day and the capacity will be increased to 600.000 m3/day after commissioning the second stage. Population equivalent is 1.600.000 person in the first stage and 2.500.000 person in the second stage.
The wastewater from Bakirkoy, Bahcelievler, Bagcilar and a part of Kucukcekmece and Sultangazi districts are treated in the plant. The wastewater polluting Ayamama and Tavukcu creeks before are treated in the Atakoy Biological Treatment Plant now.
Carbon in wastewater and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus are removed via microorganisms in advanced biological treatment. The sludge produced after treatment are dried and turned into a product that can be used as manure or fuel. The calorific value of dried sludge is approximately equal to lignite coal and it can be used as second fuel in cement factories.
A gas turbine type cogeneration plant is constructed to meet thermal energy requirements of sludge drying unit and all energy requirements of the plant.
Two gas turbines being 4,6 MW and having ability to burn natural gas and biogas from wastewater are used to produce required electricity. A part of the effluent from Atakoy wastewater treatment plant will be further treated in disinfection plant that will be built in future and than can be used for irrigation and industry.
